§ Questions & answers
How do I commission a custom piece?

Reach out by email at michael@redbarnwoodturning.com or through the contact form above. Include what you have in mind — the type of piece, approximate size, any wood species you prefer, and a rough timeline. I'll respond with questions, suggestions, and a price range.

How long does a custom piece take?

It depends on the piece and where the wood is in its drying cycle. Furniture built from pre-dried stock usually takes two to four months. Turned bowls starting from freshly felled wood can take 12 to 18 months because the wood has to air-dry between rough turning and finish turning. I'll give you an honest timeline before we start.

What does a custom bowl or table cost?

Pricing depends on size, species, complexity, and finish. Small turned bowls start around $60 to $150. Dining tables typically range from $1,800 to $4,500 depending on size and joinery. I'll quote each project individually after we discuss what you're looking for.

Where does the wood come from?

Most of my wood is locally sourced from Knox County, Ohio and surrounding areas — storm-felled trees, trees taken down for construction, and logs that would otherwise become firewood. Primary species include black walnut, white oak, red oak, cherry, sugar maple, and ash.

Do you ship?

Yes. Smaller pieces ship via carrier. Large furniture is typically freight-shipped or delivered locally in Ohio and neighboring states — we'll work out the best option once the piece is finished.

Are your bowls food safe?

Yes. Bowls intended for food use are finished with food-safe mineral oil and beeswax. They're safe for dry goods like fruit, bread, nuts, or salads. Hand wash only — never put a turned wood bowl in the dishwasher.
